WordUp Minneapolis 2012 3 days, 6 hours agoThis is more of a sidenote but the discussion currently going on in the google group (http://groups.google.com/group/mpls-stpaul-wordpress/browse_thread/thread/e8388a3e4d3f4beb?hl=en) is a great place for suggestions on what topics people (beginners anyway) will want us to cover at WordUp.
Has anybody announced it to the group yet? When should…[Read more]

It hasn’t been announced to the group yet. I would be okay with announcing that we are in the process of planning an event on Sept. X. Beyond that, we don’t have much to report yet on the event as a whole.
If individual planners want to solicit help from the group, I don’t see anything wrong with that.
I don’t think we need to withhold…[Read more]

It’s true we don’t have much to report other than when/where it is (October 13 btw) However we do want to (at some point anyway) start collecting a list of topics that people would like to either see or present on. So that is something people could certainly participate in now.
I forget who is in charge of getting the topics and schedule…[Read more]

WordUp Minneapolis 2012 2 weeks, 6 days agoI know we said no beverages — however Dan says the Tea Garden would like the opportunity to have a table there and sell drinks at this event. Drinks are around $3 or $4 each and people would just buy what they want. (kinda like the caribou at best buy). Let me know what you think of that idea.
-
That sounds like a good way to provide some refreshments without having to budget for them! Maybe he can set that up right next to the tech shoppe
-
I totally love that idea! That’s the perfect middle ground to me. I think many people would appreciate beverages being available, but I didn’t want the hassle of us being responsible for finding coolers or refrigeration, hauling in the drinks, having change, etc. So from my persepctive, this is the best of both worlds. Doesn’t hurt that I…[Read more]

Do you need to clear it with HCMC.

Great! We will make it happen! I will let Bill know. Since it’s just a mobile setup I am sure they will be fine but I’ll make sure.
-
I love the idea, however I worry that selling beverages opens us up to other issues – insurance, taxes, health codes, etc. I don’t know the first thing about this stuff, but I thought I would raise the concern. Dan probably knows more about this stuff.
-
Your sense is right, those issues do exist, but they are already covered by the Tea Garden. That is why they have to have special insurance and can only use special certified commercial grade equipment, etc. The preparation is (and has to be, per health codes) done at the tea garden, so they would bring several types of drinks already prepared in…[Read more]
-
I just wanted to chime in the I concur with Barbara. Because Tea Garden is an established business and does this elsewhere, they have no choice but to cover these issues. So, I’m really not worried about it. That’s part of why I think this is the PERFECT solution. If we did it on our own, officially for anything other than water and soda, we…[Read more]

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011 1 month agoUn-Wordcamp Confirmation!! We are a GO for Un-Wordcamp on October 13, 2012 9am > 4pm with an extra hour on either side for setup and clean-up. Location is MCTC where we have FOUR ROOMS — 2 mac labs and 2 classrooms.
Two requirements from us are: 1) Bill Hendricks’ students must be able to attend for free and 2) MCTC must be listed as a…[Read more]

Awesome, that’s great news! I suppose with Bill’s students in attendance, we’ll have to be sure to include some Intro to WP and other beginner sessions in the schedule for them.

Amazing work, Barbara!
Is there an agreement to be signed (or did you already sign one)?
Next steps seem to be something like this:
1) Figure out what type of an event we want this to be. I have strong opinions. You have strong opinions. David Skarjune voiced strong opinions. Let’s work it out.
2) 1 day, 4 rooms (2 labs), 9-5 = 20 sessions…[Read more]-

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011 1 month, 1 week agoHey all!
I spoke to Bill Hendricks from MCTC today and we are still a go for using them as a venue. I will be meeting with him and a couple of the deans-of-something-or-other to figure out how many rooms we can get. Right now it looks like we will have 2 rooms (roughly 45 people each) but possibly we might also be able to get 2 mac labs as well.…[Read more] -

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011 2 months, 2 weeks agoHey all, talked to Bill Hendricks at MCTC this past monday, and this location looks GOOD for a venue. They do prefer to charge for it normally ($500ish I think) but since he is faculty, if his students can attend for free, then he can get the space free of charge. Probably for breakout sessions as well. This looks like a very good option.
So……[Read more]

Sounds great Barbara. I haven’t been able to make it to the meetings for a few months, but I am still committed to joining in to make this event happen.

Barbara,
I would like to get a date nailed down ASAP, so go ahead and ask Bill about Oct. 13 and 20.Toby
-
Sounds like a great venue, especially if we can score it for free!

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011: 8 months, 2 weeks agoYeah, I don’t think parking is a big deal either. A free WordCamp would be awesome, my only concern is that it would be harder to plan, more people will likely not show up the day of because the ticket was free. The rules say commercial purposes are prohibited, so this might not apply to [...]

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011: 8 months, 2 weeks agoBoth of these locations intrigue me… I also wouldn’t let parking deter from CoCo, there are plenty of public transit options there.
Brookdale Library sounds interesting too. How neat would it be to attend a free WordCamp? Would that even be possible?

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011: 8 months, 2 weeks agoOne other thing about the Brookdale Library is that we cannot charge for entrance. I don’t know if there is any leeway in that – like a “snack donation” or something. Sponsor dollars are okay.

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011: 8 months, 2 weeks agoI just spoke with my contact at the Central Library, and she said that we will need to go through the http://www.mintahoe.com/go/centrallibrarympls link to reserve the space. Basically, due to cuts in library funding, they have outsourced the booking of their space. So, my contact there will not be able to pull any strings in [...]

unWordCamp Planning Winter 2011: 8 months, 2 weeks agoA longer open lunch sounds good to me. Maybe if we can’t do away with the catering entirely we could at least limit it to coffee and snacks to keep the cost down and retain an open lunch.

Sweet, we can use that room for Toby’s ”State of the Wordup” keynote
Hahah! We need to find me a delightfully-enjoyable hat under which I can make broad proclamations about the world of WordPress.
I think a WordPress koolaid hat is the only way to go! http://avatarmaker.eu/free-avatars/avatars/cartoons_229/the_simpsons_254/homer_beer_hat_avatar_100x100_66405.gif
Oh, of course.
Maybe we can do something goofy in the room for one of the sessions – like a beard-off or a tricycle race or something. ideas???
Or maybe we can have an old-school NES Tecmo Super Bowl tourney happening throughout the event.
